Abeokuta City Centre

Urban and Master Planning

Abeokuta City Centre redevelopment was borne out of the state governor’s desire to redefine the city centre of the state capital with new dreams aimed at presenting a catalyst for recovery and regeneration of the old city.
A consortium of 7 architectural firms was put together by the governor to birth this dream, and an architectural masterplan was produced. The highlights include quick win projects that can be embarked on immediately to effect visual transformation of the city, and long-range developments that will enhance the culture and impact on the social growth of the city.

OAC Architects’ contribution was the development of a transport hub and retail centre.

The Design

It was designed as a glass box, but with a façade clad with geometrically shaped Titanium Dioxide panels. This, apart from keeping the U-values low thereby reducing the cooling load within the building, also neutralizes certain pollutants in the air, purifying the atmosphere around the building.

These together with other measures and components employed in the proposal are designed to enhance a good sustainability rating for the building. The project is in the Detailed Design stage, and it is hoped that it will be on site by Q1 of 2019.
